I have always been fascinated by the way people express themselves and their beliefs on the cars they drive. I remember in the late ’60s when everyone had bumper stickers with a smiley face “Have a Nice Day” or “Make Love Not War” protesting the Vietnam War. I was young so those were the only ones I understood. In the ’70s when vanity plates became popular they were all over my hometown. A friend’s mother had her name CONNIE on her yellow Cadillac and my friend’s single dad had IM FIT on his Porsche.
About a year ago I started taking photos around LA of plates that I found amusing with the idea of making a coffee table book out of them for my own coffee table. A few friends have shared in my enthusiasm and sent me photos to add to my collection.
My 9-year old friend Trent R sent this one above, to me over the weekend. He asked me last week if I was still taking photos of license plates. He must have been in the car one day while I was chasing down a plate. When I said yes he announced to his mother that he would have to keep his iPad with him at all times so he could help me with my collection. He has to wait until next year to get an iPhone. It made me wonder if he even knows what a digital camera is or if the 35mm or digital camera will completely skip his generation.
